I'm delighted that the government is going to be building a new 48 bed ward at Norwich Community Hospital for this winter. The £19.3m project is focused on community reablement, so that people who no longer have a medical need to be in hospital can be prepared and supported to return home or to community care. This is better for those patients as it reduces the time they spend in hospital, and is better for other patients as it will free up spaces in hospital for those in need of acute care.
The project is also a great example of how innovation in the NHS is helping us achieve the Prime Minister's pledge to reduce waiting lists. The ward will be one of a wave of "modular build" projects, where using a combination of standard designs allows for quicker and lower cost construction.
